Paid social for creators: when to start spending, and when to wait

5 October 2026 · 6 min read · Personex Digital

Paid social is an amplifier. Put money behind something that already works and you get more of it. Put money behind something that does not, and you pay to find that out at a larger scale. The question is rarely "should I advertise?" It is "is there something worth amplifying yet?"

Before you spend: five things that should already be true

  1. An offer people already take. Some people are already buying, booking or signing up from organic content, even if the numbers are small.
  2. A page that converts. The link people land on explains the offer clearly, works on a phone, and has a single obvious next step.
  3. Working tracking. You can see which clicks led to which outcomes, not just that clicks happened.
  4. Creative that has already earned attention. At least a few pieces of organic content that people responded to in the way you want, which gives you something to test rather than something to guess.
  5. A budget you can afford to lose. A first test is for learning. If losing it would hurt, it is too large for a test.

When to wait

If the offer has not sold yet, advertising will not fix that. Neither will it fix a slow or confusing page, or a message that your own followers do not respond to. In each of these cases, the cheaper move is to fix the underlying problem first and spend afterwards.

How to run a first test properly

  • Decide the goal before you start, and make it a business outcome such as sales, bookings or sign-ups, not likes or views.
  • Change one thing at a time. If you change the audience, the creative and the page together, you will not know which one mattered.
  • Set a fixed period and a fixed budget in advance, and do not judge the result in the first day or two, when platforms are still learning.
  • Write down what you expect to happen, so that you notice when you are wrong.

The mistakes that cost the most

  • Boosting posts from the app and treating that as advertising. It is the quickest way to spend money and the weakest way to get a business result.
  • Optimising for engagement when the goal is a sale. The platform will happily find you people who like and comment but never buy.
  • Turning the budget up sharply the moment something looks good. Increase it gradually, and watch whether results hold.
  • Trusting only the platform's own reporting. It tends to claim generously. Compare it with your own records of what was actually sold.

What good looks like at the end of a test

A good first test does not have to be profitable. It has to leave you knowing something: which message people responded to, what an enquiry or customer roughly costs, and where people dropped out. That knowledge is what makes the second round worth more than the first. If you are unsure whether you are ready, the audit in our guide to reviewing your social media is a good place to start.
